他の動物園と同様、旭山動物園も例外なく1983年に年間59万人の入園者とピークに達したが、それ以降は増えることなく、1996年には年間26万人まで落ち込み、閉園の話も囁かれるようになっていたという。


その後、市の取り組み姿勢の変化に合わせ、飼育係が一丸となって試行錯誤した結果、今の旭山動物園ができあがり、2004年7、8月には月間入園者数が初めて上野動物園を上回り、年間145万人となった。
本書は、その「復活」の背景、ポイントを園長である小菅氏が記したもの。


どうしてこれだけ動物園の人気が集まったのか？
それは、一言で言うと「見せ方を工夫したから」だという。
動物の持つ最も特徴的な能力・動きなどを見せるための環境を整えたのだ。（これを「行動展示」という）
例えば、円柱のトンネルをアザラシが泳ぐ、オラウータンが空中を歩くといったもの。


それまでの、人間に見せるというスタンスの展示から、動物の視点も取りいれ、人間・動物ともに幸せになる展示方法に変えていった。

また、もっと動物と人間の距離感を縮めることはできないかということで、飼育係が解説をする「ワンポイントガイド」、えさをあげる場面を見せる「もぐもぐタイム」、動物の解説を飼育係が書く「手書きポップ」といったお金のかかりにくい取り組みを進めた。


このような新たな取り組みには、定期的に開催されていた飼育係の「勉強会」が機能したという。
それまでは、自主研究的な側面があった探求心を、動物、そして入園者のために活用したということ。
また、著者は「改革に必要な組織とは何か」という章で、以下のようなポイントを述べている。
・飛びぬけたスター・人材はいらない。全員がそれぞれの持ち味を発揮できるような組織が理想的 （これは、動物にもいえるらしい。旭山動物園には、上野動物園のようなスター動物はいない）
・大事にしているのは、失敗を恐れずにチャレンジする気持ち。アイデアを考えたのに実行に移さない場合には、怒ることもある


動物園には、4つの役割があるとのこと。
①レクリエーションの場
②教育の場
③自然保護の場
④調査・研究の場
理想の動物園とは、野生動物の素晴らしさを伝えることができ、人々を楽しくさせ、なおかつ野生動物の保護・繁殖を通して北海道の動物に責任を持つという条件が整った施設とのこと。

テレビなどでは少し見たことがあったが、旭山動物園が復活し、現在のような状況を迎えることができた背景について、興味深く読むことができた。
これまで、動物園というと単にレクリエーションの場ということで、子供の頃に行く場所というイメージがあったが、自然保護、調査・研究といった使命を担っていると知り、いろいろな研究・取り組みを知りたいと思えるようになった。
また、この動物園では、教育のために動物の「老い」や「死」を隠さずに伝えていく方針とのこと。
一昨日あたり、旭山動物園のゾウが亡くなったとのニュースをネットで読んだ。
空前のペットブームの中、「生命」に対する教育は、ますます重要になってきているのかもしれない。
